When’s the Best Time to Make a New Year’s Resolution? The immediate and obvious answer would be, “A no-brainer. At the start of the new year!” Personally, my answer is, “Never!” Why? For me, it’s simple. I have a deep aversion to making promises I can’t or won’t keep. In my younger years, I made many New Year’s resolutions. Honestly can’t remember ever keeping one for more than a week or two –  and for most, a day or two. Somewhere in my 30’s, I decided to stop setting myself up for failure and stopped making New Year’s resolutions.

After a few short years, I realized the delight and sense of freedom that came with simply not making resolutions had been short-lived. A quiet, gnawing dissatisfaction began growing. One day, while reflecting on this internal dissonance, I realized what was wrong.  Read more!

Judge Delays Implementation of New Overtime Rule

On November 22, 2016, Texas Federal District Court Judge Amos L. Mazzant III issued a preliminary injunction temporarily delaying the implementation date of the new Department of Labor (DOL) overtime rule for executive, administrative, and professional employees scheduled to go into effect on December 1, 2016. You can read the full text of the court’s ruling here.

What does the ruling mean? The jury is still out on the long-term effect. The DOL can appeal the judge’s ruling and it is uncertain whether such an appeal would be successful. The new Trump administration could elect to forgo an appeal and let the court’s injunction stand. This eleventh-hour injunction has left things in a state of flux.  Read more!
