Is it Really Pastoral Care?
On countless occasions over the years, I have asked pastors and lay leaders “What do you mean when you say, ‘Pastoral Care?’” Most often they respond by recounting how they care for the people of the church. I let them go on for a bit, then I interrupt, making the sound of a buzzer and forming the time-out sign with my hands.
I then tell them, “You don’t ever want to call what you are describing as ‘pastoral care’ for two reasons. First, it has nothing to do with caring for the pastor! Why in the world would you call something that has nothing to do with the pastor’s care, ‘pastoral care?’ The answer to that question leads directly to the second reason you should never call it ‘pastoral care.’ Because if you call it ‘pastoral care,’ whose job is it?
