The Loss of Civility
Is it possible that civility is gasping its last breaths in America? What ever happened to honest, open, robust debate? When did we lose the ability to disagree agreeably and compromise for the sake of the greater good? When did we become so sure of ourselves that we would fight for our viewpoint no matter the consequences or carnage? I find myself longing for the good old days of Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neil. Hard to imagine political opponents more diverse in their political views, but when it mattered, they would meet, smoke a couple of cigars and drink whiskey in quantities known only to them and arrive at a compromise that served the nation well.
